Jeanne Moreau is Célestine, a Parisian chambermaid who takes a position at a provincial French estate in the 1930s and quickly finds a household built on sexual hypocrisy, class tension, and private obsession. Her employer flirts openly, the family patriarch fixates on her boots, and the groundskeeper Joseph (Georges Géret) carries a hard, openly reactionary streak. After the old man dies and a local girl is raped and murdered, Célestine postpones her departure, convinced Joseph is involved. What follows stays rooted in the routines of service while suspicion, desire, and the rot of the bourgeois household keep pressing closer.
