Charlie is a former concert pianist who has changed his name and now plays jazz in a shabby Paris bar, keeping his head down until his brothers arrive on the run from gangsters they’ve swindled. Charles Aznavour is Charlie, quiet and withdrawn, while waitress Lena (Marie Dubois) becomes his closest ally as the trouble closes in. Helping Richard and Chico escape pulls Charlie back toward the life he left behind, and Lena gets caught in the same tightening circle. The film moves through back-room conversations, street chases, and sudden bursts of violence with noir melancholy, offhand comedy, and romance.
