In late-1950s Harlem, three sisters leave their church choir for the nightclub circuit and, by the 1960s, find success as a girl group — with fame pulling the act and the family in different directions. Lonette McKee, Irene Cara, and Dwan Smith are the trio at the center, while Mary Alice is the mother watching their rise turn complicated. As the sisters move from local performances toward a bigger spotlight, ambition, drug trouble, and the pressures of the music business begin to strain both the group and the bond between them.
