Lady Sings the Blues

DramaRomance144 min

In the jazz clubs and back rooms of mid-century America, Billie Holiday fights to turn a singular voice into a life on her own terms. As her fame grows, so do the pressures around her: racism, exploitation, unstable relationships, and the damage of addiction. The film follows her rise from poverty to stardom, then stays with the private struggles that threaten to overtake the music itself. Diana Ross centers the story as Holiday, while Billy Dee Williams appears as a man who becomes part of her turbulent orbit. What unfolds is a portrait of an artist trying to keep hold of herself as success and pain become harder to separate.
