After handing his plane ticket to a stranger and learning the flight has crashed, Ben Affleck is Buddy Amaral, a successful Los Angeles ad executive whose guilt sends him into alcoholism and then a 12-step program. Trying to make amends, Buddy seeks out Abby (Gwyneth Paltrow), the dead man’s widow, planning to help her and her two sons without saying why. Instead, he finds himself drawn into her life while hiding the chance encounter that links them. Moving between ad-agency polish and the domestic world Abby is holding together after sudden loss, the story turns on grief, secrecy, and a romance shadowed by what Buddy knows.
