Stories We Tell
Documentary109 min
Sarah Polley turns the camera on her own family, piecing together secrets about her mother, Diane, through interviews with relatives and friends whose memories don’t line up. Her father, Michael Polley, is one of the documentary’s central voices, while family friend Harry Gulkin adds another version of the same history. As stories overlap and contradict each other, Polley weaves in archival material and staged Super-8 recreations, assembling a shifting account of marriage, parenthood, and family life. The film keeps returning to a simple problem: every witness remembers the past differently, and each retelling changes what the truth looks like.
