A Shot in the Dark
ComedyCrimeMystery102 min
A murder at a wealthy Paris residence looks like an open-and-shut case until Peter Sellers is Inspector Jacques Clouseau, the spectacularly accident-prone detective assigned to investigate it. Convinced the accused maid, Maria Gambrelli (Elke Sommer), is being framed, Clouseau keeps turning a straightforward inquiry into a chain of blunders, broken furniture, and fresh chaos. As the case grows messier, Herbert Lom’s Commissioner Dreyfus has to watch his already frayed patience tested by every misstep. Blake Edwards builds the mystery around Clouseau’s misplaced confidence, romantic fixation, and talent for making every room he enters less orderly than he found it.
