In the Heat of the Night
CrimeDramaMysteryThriller110 min
Passing through Sparta, Mississippi, Philadelphia homicide detective Virgil Tibbs is arrested for a murder he didn’t commit, then pulled into the investigation after exposing the local police’s mistake. Sidney Poitier’s Tibbs moves through the town with cool precision, meeting open hostility from police chief Bill Gillespie and from citizens who want him gone; Rod Steiger gives Gillespie a hard, uneasy authority. As Tibbs and Gillespie work the case from the station house to the town’s wealthiest homes, the search for a killer keeps colliding with the racism and power structure that shape every exchange.
