Former country star Mac Sledge wakes up broke at a rural Texas motel, where a small job becomes the start of a different life. Robert Duvall is Mac, a singer-songwriter whose alcoholism has wrecked his career and strained his family; Tess Harper’s Rosa Lee, the young widow who runs the motel, gives him work and draws him into a quieter home with her young son. As Mac tries to stay sober and put himself back together, the routines of everyday life sit alongside old wounds, country music, and the possibility of stepping back toward the career he left behind.
