Imprisoned in the 1940s for the double murder of his wife and her lover, banker Andy Dufresne arrives at Shawshank State Penitentiary and begins navigating a brutal prison system under an amoral warden. Tim Robbins is Andy, a reserved newcomer whose accounting skills soon make him useful behind bars, while Morgan Freeman’s Red, a longtime inmate and prison fixer, becomes his closest observer and eventual friend. As the years pass inside Shawshank, the film follows prison routines, parole hearings, guard violence, and the corruption that runs from the cellblock to the warden’s office.
