A lonely professor in late middle age returns to his New York apartment and finds that a young immigrant couple has been living there by mistake. Instead of turning Tarek and Zainab out, he lets them stay, and the awkward arrangement slowly becomes a friendship that pulls him out of his sealed-off routine. Through shared meals, music, and the small rhythms of daily life, he is drawn into a world far from his own. Then a sudden arrest shatters that fragile stability, forcing him to confront the machinery of post-9/11 immigration enforcement and his own limited place within it. Tom McCarthy directs a story rooted in ordinary encounters that keep widening into something much larger.
