In late-1970s England, Ian Curtis is a young husband and office worker whose voice helps turn Joy Division from a local band into a rising post-punk act. Sam Riley is Curtis, moving between rehearsals, recording sessions, and the strain of sudden attention as his epilepsy begins to shape daily life. Samantha Morton is Deborah, his wife, while Alexandra Maria Lara enters the story as another relationship unsettles an already crowded private world. Shot in black and white, the film follows Curtis from his schoolboy years into Joy Division’s early ascent, keeping the focus on the person behind the songs as fame, illness, and home life begin to collide.
