Conversation Piece
DramaRomance121 min
In Rome, Burt Lancaster is a retired American professor whose luxurious palazzo has become a museum of paintings, books, and carefully protected solitude. His routine is broken when Silvana Mangano's vulgar marchesa forces him to rent the apartment above, arriving with her lover (Helmut Berger), her daughter, and the daughter’s boyfriend. Their noise, demands, and shifting allegiances pull the professor into a household he never wanted, as class resentment, generational friction, and buried loneliness begin to press against the formality of his life. Luchino Visconti keeps the drama close, centered on rooms, conversations, and the uneasy intimacy of shared space.
