In late 19th-century Italy, Giancarlo Giannini is Tullio Hermil, a wealthy aristocrat who openly keeps a mistress and flaunts the affair before his wife. When he begins to suspect that his wife may have been unfaithful herself, his cruelty gives way to fixation, and the marriage he has treated with contempt becomes the center of his attention. Laura Antonelli is the wife forced to endure his shifting devotion, while Jennifer O'Neill appears as the mistress whose presence unsettles the household. Luchino Visconti stages the story as a portrait of vanity, desire, and jealousy inside an elegant, brittle world.
