Giuseppe Sulfaro is Renato, a 12-year-old in wartime Sicily whose world shifts on the same day he gets a bicycle, hears that World War II has begun, and sees Malèna arrive. Through Renato’s fixation, Monica Bellucci’s Malèna becomes the center of village life: desired by the men, judged by the women, and left increasingly alone after her husband is presumed dead. As Renato watches her from the street, the film tracks how beauty, jealousy, and rumor shape her place in the town and his own uneasy passage into adolescence.
