In World War II Italy, Guido Orefice is a Jewish waiter and bookseller whose pursuit of Dora unfolds with the comic, storybook rhythm he brings to everything around him. Roberto Benigni gives Guido a buoyant, quick-talking charm, while Nicoletta Braschi’s Dora becomes the center of the life he builds. After marriage and the birth of their son, Giosuè, fascist deportation shatters that world and sends Guido and the boy to a concentration camp. With Dora held elsewhere, Guido tries to shield his son by turning their captivity into an elaborate game, using jokes, riddles, and invention to keep terror at a distance.
