The United States of Leland

CrimeDrama108 min

After the murder of a mentally disabled boy, withdrawn teenager Leland Fitzgerald is sent to juvenile detention, leaving his girlfriend Becky and the rest of their community to reckon with the crime. Ryan Gosling is Leland, a quiet presence at the center of the story, while Don Cheadle's Pearl Madison, a teacher at the prison, decides to write about the case. Becky and her sister Julie are caught in the aftermath as the film moves between the detention facility and the lives unsettled outside it, circling a killing that resists simple explanation.
