On the Greek island of Cephalonia during World War II, Pelagia (Penélope Cruz) is left behind when her fisherman fiancé joins the Greek army. Italian troops soon occupy the island, and her doctor father is forced to house Captain Antonio Corelli, Nicolas Cage’s Italian officer, whose mandolin and courtly manner make him an uneasy fit for military life. As Pelagia’s household adjusts to the occupation, her growing connection to Corelli complicates her ties to family, country, and the man who went off to war.
