In a wealthy household, maids Solange and Claire pass their mistress’s absences by staging private rituals, slipping into Madame’s clothes and taking turns acting out the power she holds over them. Glenda Jackson is Solange, alongside Susannah York’s Claire, the other half of a bond shaped by envy, dependence, and performance. Vivien Merchant’s Madame hovers over the film even before she enters, as the sisters’ roleplaying turns the house into a tense chamber of imitation, resentment, and desire. Adapted from Jean Genet’s play, the story keeps its focus tight on shifting identities and the unstable line between servant and mistress.
