In the 1920s Australian Outback, the Carmodys make their living as sheep drovers, moving from job to job with no fixed home. Robert Mitchum is Paddy, who wants to keep following the road, while Deborah Kerr’s Ida is tired of drifting and hopes to buy a farm for herself and their teenage son, Sean. As the family trails the shearing season from camp to camp, drinking, gambling, a racehorse, the birth of a child, and a sheep-shearing contest keep pressing on the same divide: whether to stay with the wandering life that defines them or finally put down roots.
