In North Africa during World War II, an ambulance becomes the lifeline for a small group of British army personnel and nurses making a punishing trek across the desert toward Alexandria. John Mills is the officer trying to keep the group moving, with Sylvia Syms among the passengers trapped in the same heat, danger, and mounting strain. The route is long, exposed, and uncertain, and the film keeps its focus on the people inside that vehicle as much as the landscape around them. For their leader, the thought of an ice-cold beer in Alexandria becomes a steady image at the end of the road.
