A newly promoted police inspector kills his mistress, then turns the case into an experiment. Certain that his rank places him beyond suspicion, he plants clue after clue pointing straight back to himself and watches how his own department responds. Instead of following the evidence, the investigators look away, bend procedure, or force the facts to fit someone else. As the inquiry tightens, the inspector keeps pushing, testing how much truth a system built on obedience and power can refuse to see. Gian Maria Volonté is at the center of this taunting game, and Elio Petri frames the murder investigation as a bitter satire of authority protecting itself.
