Kathy Bates is Evelyn Couch, a dissatisfied Southern housewife who finds an unexpected confidante in an Alabama nursing home. Mrs. Threadgoode (Jessica Tandy) tells her about Whistle Stop in the 1920s, where the fearless Idgie Threadgoode and Mary-Louise Parker’s Ruth Jamison build a bond that comes to center the town’s cafe. As the story moves between Evelyn’s present and Mrs. Threadgoode’s memories, Mary Stuart Masterson’s Idgie comes into focus as a rebellious local original, with Ruth beside her through hardship, gossip, and loss. The past Mrs. Threadgoode describes begins to reshape how Evelyn sees her own life.
