A burglar evading the police takes a Connecticut couple hostage on Christmas Eve, then discovers their marriage is harder to contain than the crime. Denis Leary is Gus, a thief who hides out in the home of Caroline and Lloyd; Judy Davis's Caroline and Lloyd (Kevin Spacey) keep up a running barrage of insults even at gunpoint. When their holiday dinner and family gathering can’t be called off, Gus has to stay in the house and improvise, posing as the couple’s marriage counselor while relatives arrive and every argument threatens to blow his cover.
