Fifteen years after his death, carousel barker Billy Bigelow gets a chance to ask for one day back on Earth, where his wife Julie and the daughter he never met may need him. As Billy tells his story at the gates of heaven, Gordon MacRae fills in the earlier years: the smooth-talking carnival man, the romance with millworker Julie Jordan, and the choices that cut their time short. Shirley Jones is Julie, bringing a grounded center to a Rodgers and Hammerstein story that moves between a seaside Maine carnival, married life, and the afterlife.
