Jane Falbury is trying to keep her New England farm afloat when her sister invites a troupe of actors to take over the barn and mount a show. Judy Garland is Jane, who puts the performers to work in the fields in exchange for meals and a place to stay, turning rehearsals into a collision between farm labor and backstage chaos. Gene Kelly's Joe, the troupe's director, becomes the focus of Jane's growing attraction — and a problem, since he’s already tied to her sister. Eddie Bracken and Gloria DeHaven are part of the company crowding the farmhouse as the production lurches toward opening night.
