In late-1930s Harlem, Quick Brown works beside Sugar Ray at Club Sugar Ray, a nightclub with an illegal casino tucked inside. Eddie Murphy is Quick, the club’s fast-moving younger operator, while Richard Pryor’s Sugar Ray tries to hold his ground as gangsters push in and corrupt police look for a payoff. The pressure around the club turns every favor, insult and hustle into a potential street war. Redd Foxx, Della Reese and Danny Aiello round out a cast moving through a world of back rooms, loaded dice and hard bargains.
