Don Camillo (Fernandel) is thrown when Peppone, the Communist mayor of their rural Italian town, decides to run for parliament. Rather than stay above the fight, the priest launches a campaign of his own, determined to block his longtime rival even as he ignores what he believes are the Lord’s warnings. Gino Cervi’s Peppone gives the clash its equal force: a local strongman whose political ambitions turn every public square, church step, and town gathering into contested ground. The film builds its comedy out of that running battle between faith and politics, with national elections filtering through one stubborn village feud.
