As a new Afghanistan strategy is pushed in Washington, its consequences echo through a California classroom and an exposed ridge overseas. Robert Redford is Dr. Mallery, a political science professor trying to rouse one gifted, drifting student, while Tom Cruise's Senator Jasper Irving uses an exclusive interview with a skeptical reporter to lay out his case for victory. At the same time, two of Mallery's former students are left stranded after an ambush in Afghanistan, waiting for rescue as Taliban fighters close in. The film cuts among policy, media, and combat, tying public arguments to the people sent to live with them.
