Back home, Nicole Kidman’s Ada is trying to hold onto her family farm with little idea how to manage it, until Renée Zellweger’s Ruby arrives with practical skill and a blunt, unsentimental streak. Anthony Minghella splits the story between Inman’s passage through a battered South and Ada’s struggle to keep her home intact while war closes in from every side.
