Mr. Deeds Goes to Town

ComedyDramaRomance115 min

Longfellow Deeds is a Vermont tuba player whose quiet life is upended when a distant relative leaves him a fortune and sends him to New York. Gary Cooper is Deeds, baffled but stubborn as lawyers, social climbers, and schemers close in around him. Among them is Jean Arthur’s Babe Bennett, a newspaper reporter who takes an interest in the new millionaire for reasons of her own. Directed by Frank Capra, the film puts Deeds’ plainspoken decency against a city of headlines, money, and people eager to manage both.
