In 18th-century Qing China, the theft of the Green Destiny sword draws two seasoned warriors into pursuit of both the weapon and a notorious fugitive. Chow Yun-Fat is Li Mu Bai, a revered swordsman hoping to leave his violent life behind, while Michelle Yeoh's Yu Shu Lien follows the trail with her own sense of duty and restraint. Their search leads to Jen Yu (Ziyi Zhang), a young aristocrat whose hidden martial-arts skill and restless streak place her at the center of the conflict. Ang Lee frames the story around rooftop chases, bamboo duels, and the pull between duty, desire, and reputation.
