In China’s Warring States period, a district prefect earns an audience with the King of Qin by claiming he has killed the three assassins who once nearly reached the throne. Jet Li is the quiet warrior at the center of the courtly showdown, recounting his path to the palace as the king tests every detail of the story. Across those retellings, figures played by Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Maggie Cheung emerge as rival swordsmen, lovers, and possible enemies, with each version shifting the balance of truth. The film moves between imperial chambers and stylized duels, drawing on legend, politics, and wuxia martial arts.
