My Man Godfrey
ComedyDramaRomance95 min
A Fifth Avenue scavenger hunt sends socialite Irene Bullock to a city dump, where she finds Godfrey Park, an unemployed man she recruits as her “forgotten man” and then hires as butler for her chaotic Manhattan household. Carole Lombard’s Irene is all enthusiasm and impulse, dragging Godfrey deeper into the Bullocks’ world of feuds, vanity, and drawing-room absurdity. William Powell gives Godfrey a dry, steady presence as he navigates Irene’s attention and the hostility of her spoiled sister, Cornelia. Beneath the fast banter and high-society farce, the film keeps one eye on class in 1930s New York.
