Alice Sycamore is the only relatively conventional member of a household where odd hobbies and open-door chaos are simply daily life. When she falls for James Stewart's Tony Kirby, the son of a wealthy banker, the romance collides with his parents' stiff ideas about class, money, and respectability. A dinner meant to bring the two families together quickly turns into a showdown between the Kirbys' polished world and the Sycamores' unruly house. Jean Arthur is Alice, trying to hold onto both love and family, while Lionel Barrymore is her grandfather, a contented skeptic of business, status, and the rules everyone else lives by.
