On a northern Italian farm at the turn of the 20th century, several sharecropper families struggle to survive under a landowner’s rule. When a priest advises Batisti and Batistina to send their young son Minec to school, they give up his help in the fields; after the boy breaks his wooden clog, Batisti risks the family’s future by cutting a tree for a replacement. Luigi Ornaghi and Francesca Moriggi are among the ensemble in a story shaped by fieldwork, church, marriage, and small household crises, where poverty governs nearly every decision.
