Coffee and Cigarettes
ComedyDrama97 min
Eleven black-and-white vignettes gather musicians, actors, and assorted strangers around diner tables, where small talk, awkward pauses, and odd fixations stretch out over coffee and cigarettes. Jim Jarmusch links the standalone scenes through repetition and rhythm rather than plot, letting each conversation turn in its own direction. Steven Wright and Roberto Benigni share one of the film’s earliest deadpan exchanges; elsewhere, Iggy Pop and Tom Waits turn casual chatter into a quiet contest of ego and memory. From sketch to sketch, the setting barely changes, but the voices, tensions, and little social rituals do.
