While her British diplomat husband is absorbed by work, Marlene Dietrich's neglected wife slips away to Paris and falls for an American diplomat she meets there. Herbert Marshall is the husband back in a world of formal dinners and official duties, while Melvyn Douglas brings an easy charm to the man who unsettles that marriage. Paris hotels, drawing rooms, and carefully managed appearances frame a story where attraction and discretion are always in conflict.
