The Devil Is a Woman
ComedyDramaRomance80 min
During Carnival in turn-of-the-century Spain, exiled republican Antonio Galvan meets the elusive Concha Perez just as an old friend warns that she has already unraveled his life. Marlene Dietrich is Concha, a woman who draws both men into the same dangerous attachment, while Lionel Atwill’s Captain Costelar recounts his history with her and presses Antonio to stay away. As Antonio ignores the warning, the film moves through Costelar’s bitter flashbacks, where friendship, desire, and humiliation start to fold into one another against a masquerade-filled Spanish backdrop shaped by Josef von Sternberg’s stylized eye.
