In 1960s Britain, Anne Bancroft is Jo, a mother of seven who leaves her second husband to marry Jake, a successful screenwriter. Peter Finch’s Jake brings affection, charm, and a pattern of infidelity that keeps unsettling their household. As Jo tries to manage marriage, pregnancy, and family life, the film stays close to her increasingly strained inner life, watching a seemingly comfortable middle-class home give way to suspicion, frustration, and emotional isolation. James Mason is part of the supporting cast in this intimate portrait of a marriage under pressure.
