After a secret marriage, Othello arrives in Cyprus with his new wife, Desdemona, and comes under the influence of his resentful ensign, Iago, who begins to convince him she has been unfaithful. Laurence Olivier is the celebrated general at the center of Shakespeare’s story, while Frank Finlay’s Iago works with quiet calculation against him. Maggie Smith appears as Desdemona in this screen version of the National Theatre production, with Joyce Redman as Emilia. The film stays close to the play’s language and stage roots as jealousy, rank, and private suspicion start to overtake a marriage.
