In late-1940s New York, Jackson Pollock is a painter on the edge of recognition, struggling with alcoholism, self-doubt, and an urge to shut the world out. Ed Harris is Pollock, with Marcia Gay Harden as fellow artist Lee Krasner, whose partnership with him shapes both his work and his climb into the center of the downtown art scene. As his paintings begin to attract attention—culminating in a 1949 Life magazine headline asking whether he is the greatest living painter in the United States—the film follows the collision of artistic ambition, public fame, and the instability pressing in on his private life.
