The Man Who Wasn't There

CrimeDrama116 min

Billy Bob Thornton is Ed Crane, a taciturn barber drifting through a small California town in the summer of 1949. His marriage to Frances McDormand’s Doris is already strained when he begins to suspect she’s involved with her boss, and a stranger’s offer to buy into a new business gives Ed a reckless way to change his life. What begins as a plan for quick money pulls him toward blackmail, murder, and the machinery of punishment. Joel and Ethan Coen shoot the story in stark black and white, leaning into clipped narration, deadpan detail, and noir shadows around Ed’s unreadable stare.
