At a small church in upstate New York, Ethan Hawke is Reverend Ernst Toller, a minister already worn down by grief and a tormented past when a pregnant parishioner, Mary (Amanda Seyfried), asks him to counsel her husband, an environmental activist in deep despair. The request pulls Toller into a widening moral and spiritual crisis, where diary entries, funeral duties, and questions about climate change begin to crowd out the boundaries he has tried to keep. Religion, guilt, and political anxiety press in as his private life starts to unravel.
