After a threat is whispered to him in the confessional, Brendan Gleeson is Father James, a decent Irish priest trying to carry on as violence and bitterness press in from all sides. The warning hangs over every encounter, and the people around him — among them figures portrayed by Chris O'Dowd and Kelly Reilly — become part of an increasingly uneasy portrait of a community marked by anger, grief, and mistrust. John Michael McDonagh’s film follows James as faith, duty, and the secrecy of the confessional are tested by a danger he can’t openly name.
