The Goodbye Girl

ComedyDramaRomance111 min

After her live-in boyfriend leaves her and her young daughter without a home, unemployed dancer Paula McFadden is forced to share her Manhattan apartment with the tenant he secretly sublet it to. Marsha Mason is Paula, trying to hold the household together while clashing with Elliot Garfield, a struggling actor newly arrived for an off-off-Broadway Richard III. Richard Dreyfuss gives Elliot plenty of ego and nerves, and Quinn Cummings stands out as Paula’s unusually perceptive child. Their cramped New York living arrangement begins as a legal and personal impasse, with mismatched habits, bruised pride, and attraction complicating the space.
