Christopher Columbus leaves Spain determined to find a westward route across the Atlantic, gambling his reputation and his crew’s lives on a voyage few believe will succeed. When land is finally sighted, the triumph quickly turns into a struggle over what this “new world” should become. As Columbus, played by Gérard Depardieu, tries to build a colony and hold authority from across the ocean, pressure closes in from ambitious rivals, suspicious backers, and the harsh realities of settlement. The film follows the expeditions themselves and the turmoil that follows contact, showing how Columbus’s pursuit of glory and empire reshapes the lives of the Indigenous people he encounters.
