Loretta Castorini, a 37-year-old Italian American widow in New York, agrees to marry her boyfriend Johnny even though she doesn’t love him, then finds herself drawn to the brother he left behind. Cher is Loretta, practical and superstitious, while Nicolas Cage’s Ronny is a one-handed bakery worker with a volatile streak, a love of opera, and a long-simmering grudge against Johnny. As Johnny is away, Loretta tries to keep her engagement intact while Ronny pushes his way into her life. Around them, her close-knit family and neighborhood are full of their own romantic complications, confessions, and crossed loyalties.
