Monsieur Hire lives alone, keeps to himself, and spends his evenings watching a young woman in the building across the way. Michel Blanc is Hire, a withdrawn man whose quiet routine starts to fray after police question him about a local murder. When Alice (Sandrine Bonnaire) realizes she’s being observed, the distance between them narrows even as suspicion gathers around him. Framed by apartment windows, sidewalks, and watchful neighbors, the film stays close to Hire’s increasingly exposed world as private obsession and a criminal investigation begin to overlap.
