Sandrine Bonnaire is Sophie, a quiet maid hired by an upper-class family in rural Brittany, where she moves through the house with careful efficiency and keeps her distance. Outside that orderly world, she falls in with Isabelle Huppert's Jeanne, an outspoken postmistress whose resentment of bourgeois manners is anything but hidden. As Jeanne draws Sophie further into her orbit, the family's polished routines start to fray, especially around the patriarch Georges (Jean-Pierre Cassel). Beneath the daily chores and formal dinners, class tension and Sophie's illiteracy become fault lines in the household.
